The game of cricket can boast the elegance of a beautifully guided cover run, the precision and moxie of a ramp shot, the field sighting of a reverse sweep. And sometimes cricket lives for the muscle of the highs in the fold.

Ever wondered which players hit the ball the hardest? Sky Sports partnered with Audi this summer to answer that question with the introduction of the Power Meter for the second season of The Hundred.

It set the tone for Sky and Audi’s ambition to implement further innovation across multiple sports within the channel’s offering, from golf to rugby league and beyond.

The Hundred represents cricket’s greatest innovation in recent times, presenting itself as a perfect platform to showcase the exciting potential of Sky and Audi’s partnership.

The Power Meter uses Hawkeye data to measure the biggest hits in both the men’s and women’s competition, pitting the world’s Liam Livingstones and Will Jacks against each other while highlighting the talents of the Lizelle Lees and Nat Scivers .

The Power Meter saw five additional Hawkeye cameras scattered around the site to accurately track the path of the ball from the bat to the end point.

Hawkeye data rated both the speed and distance of shots at 50 before producing a combined score of 100, with data bars visible on the screen to animate each value.

“They measure the speed directly, the launch angles and then they come up with a rating,” said Bryan Henderson, Cricket Director for Sky Sports. “For example, if Liam Livingstone hits a sixty-foot six and spits out the park, that gets a rating of about 96, something like that.

At the heart of The Hundred’s introduction and early success was its gender-inclusive appeal to young and new audiences, as well as longtime cricket fans.

The Power Meter marks another injection of innovation to combine with unique on-screen graphics, the high octane cricket demanded by the short format of the competition and both the regularity and accessibility of games to further that goal.

“They want to know how far it went, why it went, what distance the ball has traveled,” said former India head coach Ravi Shastri.

“When you see the Power Meter, it explains the angles from which the ball hits the bat, and also the bat’s speed, which is so important. I think it’s a brilliant concept that’s ideal for The Hundred.”
